Building a Community in a Diverse International School
In an International School environment, particularly one with a vibrant Boarding community, a House System is a powerful connecter and motivator!
There are many benefits and opportunities associated with the House System. These include:
- Celebrating Diversity: With students from various backgrounds, the House System provides a platform to celebrate cultural differences.
- Building Camaraderie: House competitions, both academic and athletic, create a healthy sense of rivalry that unites students across year groups. This fosters teamwork, leadership skills and school spirit.
- Leadership Opportunities: Each house can have student prefects or captains, providing leadership opportunities for students to develop responsibility and mentorship skills.
- Vertical Integration: By mixing students of different ages in houses, young students benefit from the guidance of older peers, while seniors develop mentoring skills.
- Combating Homesickness: Boarding schools can feel overwhelming for students, especially those coming from abroad. Houses create small, familiar groups within the larger school, fostering a sense of belonging and easing the transition.
- Parent and alumni engagement: The House system is not just for children and adolescents, whole families are connected to the respective house and generation after generation will join.
